Funding of a mower for Kilkhampton Common

It’s time to get the lawn mower out!

Summer is fast approaching. I’m sure everyone with a lawn is noticing the grass is growing vigorously and they’re out with the mower more frequently. The same applies to Kilkhampton common. As well as the hedgerows, the grass pathways are sprouting.

It’s amazing to think the twenty acres of Common was once a neglected stretch of countryside. Cornwall Environmental Consultants established the sites proven environment value and the land is now dedicated to nature conservation.

Our core belief is everyone should have access to nature. We’ve established public access through the Common using a combination of way-marked rights of ways and permissive footpaths. This allows visitors to explore the diverse areas of grassland, woodland and river habitats. Three large ponds have also been created to allow the diversity of wildlife on the Common to flourish.

We naturally want to promote Kilkhampton Common and help people reconnect with their local nature and therefore we must ensure that the land is managed so it remains in an accessible and safe state.

Successful funding from Cornwall Community Foundation

Cornwall Community Foundation Logo - Westland Countryside Stewards Funding Mower With help from the Cornwall Community Foundation, we were able to purchase a ride on mower to aid in managing the land, grassed pathways and picnicking areas.

As a charity, we do rely on the generosity of private and public funding. Therefore, we’re happy to advertise the availability of the mower, and one of our people to operate it, as part of our charitable work to further benefit other local community group and public spaces. If this would be of interest to any local group, you can contact us.

We hope to see you on the Common soon.
